SUMMARY:Lasers in Low Carbon Energy - AILU workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\n  \n \n  \n  \n\n  \n  \nIntroduction\n \nChair: Tian Long See (MTC) \nEnergy generation requires radical transformation globally between now and 2030 due to more rigorous climate targets set by the UK government and around the world. This has presented huge challenges in terms of material resources\, manufacturing\, installation\, servicing as well as infrastructure. There are several different types of renewable energy with their own sets of unique challenges when it comes to manufacturing and infrastructure needs. For example\, wind and solar energy are not continuous and therefore require power storage (through batteries) as well as base level generation (nuclear power in the short term fusion energy in the longer term). On top of this we have existing nuclear power stations which take decades to decommission. \nNew technology in laser joining\, cutting\, texturing\, hardening\, cladding and shock peening (to name a few) are addressing some of the issues in manufacturing and decommissioning. Lasers will be a part of the landscape of Low Carbon energy generation. This workshop will address some of the areas where lasers are already being applied\, or need to address in future years. \nThis workshop will set out the needs and give case studies of existing applications in the field. It is ideal for researchers\, manufacturers\, integrators and end-users of the technology to learn about the leading edge of laser material processing technology in this field. \nThe 2023 AILU AGM will follow this workshop\, from 14:30 – 15:30 (see here). \nProgramme\n09:30 – 10:00  Registration \n10:00 – 10:10 Welcome\nTian Long See\, Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) \nSession 1\n \n10:10 – 10:30  Net Zero: Targets\, Progress & How Industrial Lasers Contribute\nDave MacLellan\, AILU \n10:30 – 10:50  High Heat Flux Lasers in Nuclear Fusion Engineering\nPetros Efthymiou\, UKAE \n10:50 – 11:10  Controlling Hazardous Fume for Decommissioning\nLewis Jones\, Loughborough University \n11:10 AM – 11:40  Break \nSession 2 \n11:40 – 12:00 Laser Welding for Electrification\nPaola De Bono\, TWI \n12:00 – 12:20  Laser Processing in Battery Production – Status Quo & Future Perspectives\nJohannes Kriegler\, Technical University\, Munich \n12:20 – 13:00  Discussion Session \n13:00 – 14:15  Lunch \n14:30 AILU AGM (optional) \n\n  \nVenue\nPost code for Sat Nav: S60 5TZ \nAMP Technology Centre\nAdvanced Manufacturing Park\nBrunel Way\nRotherham\nSouth Yorkshire\nS60 5WG \nT: +44(0)114 254 1200 \nSee here for more travel information \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAILU EVENT T&Cs\nSee AILU Event Terms and Conditions here.\n____________________________________ \nBy registering for this meeting you agree that you are happy for AILU and Sponsors to contact you after the event

SUMMARY:AILU Workshop: Additive Manufacturing
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by\n \n\n  \nIntroduction\nChair: Moataz Attallah\, Universtity of Birmingham \nMetal Additive Manufacturing has advanced significantly in terms of process capability\, throughput and quality assurance. Higher power laser sources and advanced scanning hardware and software together with material optimisation have resulted in greater uptake of the application in a wide range of markets. \nFine metal powder or solid wire is fused by laser (and non-laser) technologies to form solid objects which can achieve high accuracy and repeatability with minimal excess weight or material and maximum mechanical properties – enabling new geometric solutions\, many inspired by natural forms. \nPresenters will cover recent developments in process control\, imaging\, modeling and material production as well as current advances in design for additive applications\, making this workshop of interest to anyone with an interest in manufacturing\, research or use of additive manufacturing. \nDelegates will be able to tour the Additive Manufacturing facilities at the university after the workshop. \nFree places are available for SMEs. If you’re an SME based in the Midlands\, AILU has partnered with AMTECAA to provide free tickets to this event. You will also have the opportunity to find out more about AMTECAA’s five fully funded technical feasibility projects supporting SMEs to access equipment and expertise to optimise or develop new products and processes. SUMMARY:AILU Workshop: High Power Laser Welding
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\n  \n \n  \n\nIntroduction\nChair: Wojciech Suder (Cranfield University) \nWith high power fibre lasers now well-established as the laser of choice for welding metals\, the thickness of laser welds in all metals is increasing. Keyhole welding\, with or without the assistance of arc welding (to make hybrid welds) is possible in material greater than 50 mm thick. On the other hand\, the high power lasers are capable of welding smaller thicknesses at very high speeds\, opening up new applications involving high quality and high throughput reflective metals like copper and aluminium. \nThis workshop is aimed at sharing the latest results from researchers and manufacturers in the field of laser welding in the multi-kW regime. As price per watt continues to fall and wall-plug efficiency improves\, the inherent viability of laser welding and the ease with which it can be automated makes it more and more the process of choice. \nA range of speakers will present and exhibitors offering products to this market will be on hand to share information about their capabilities.  The MTC is located conveniently for the M6 motorway\, between Coventry and Rugby and delegates will be able to tour the facilities at the end of the workshop. \n  \nProgramme\n09:30 – 10:00  Registration \n10:00  – 10:10   Welcome & Introduction\nWojciech Suder\, Cranfield University \n10:10 – 10:30  Insight into the latest material joining development at the MTC\nKevin Withers\, MTC \n10:30 – 10:50   Overview of Laser Welding – When to use it and when not\nGoncalo Pardal\, Cranfield University \n10:50 – 11:10   Utilising laser beam shaping technology to improve weld quality in high volume manufacturing for E mobility\nPasquale Franciosa\, Warwick University   \n11:10 – 11:40   Break \n11:40 – 12:00  Dynamic Beam Lasers opening new parameters for laser welding\nMeir Giladi\, Civan Lasers\, Israel  \n12:00 – 12:20   High Power Laser Welding of Copper with and without Ultrasound\nPhil Carr\, Carrs Welding \n12:20 – 12:40  Using laser welding to manufacture industrial machine drive belts\nPeter Brown\, Laser Additive Solutions \n12:40 – 13:50   Lunch \n13:50 – 14:10  Laser Welding for Fusion Machines\nTristan Tremethick\, UKAEA \n14:10 – 14:30  A comparison of the electron beam welding and laser in vacuum welding process for low-medium penetration applications\nMax Nentwich\, Cambridge Vacuum Engineering \n14:30 – 14:50  Industrial laser cladding with metal cored wires\nJihane Guenoun\, Welding Alloys\, \n14:50 – 15:20   Break \n15:20 – 15:40 Beam Shaping Enhancements for Laser Welding\nCallum Wreford\, PowerPhotonic \n15:40 – 16:00   International Training & Qualification for high Power Laser Welding\nEurico Assuncao\, EWF\, Portugal \nTour of MTC \n  \nVenue\nManufacturingTechnology Centre (MTC)\nAnsty Park\nCoventry\nCV7 9JU \nGetting to the MTC \n\nLocation/parking\nMTC Location/parking \n  \nMain image courtesy Cranfield University

SUMMARY:Lasers drive the Green Economy towards Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nChair:  Matthew Wasley\, Photonics Lead\, KTN \n  \nClimate change is one of the most serious and urgent global issues facing our world in the 21st century. During global lockdowns in 2020 and 2021\, the impact on pollution and emissions under drastically lower transport has driven a new emphasis and urgency into tackling this topic and governments are talking about “building back better”. Glasgow will be the host city for COP26 (the UN Climate Change Conference) in November 2021\, and the UK government recently announced it will set in law an ambitious climate change target\, reducing emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. This is intended to bring the UK more than three-quarters of the way to net zero (when the amount of CO2 produced is no greater than the amount removed) by 2050. \nTo meet these targets\, the UK will need to increase its low carbon electricity generation capacity by a factor of four. This in turn requires further development of efficient renewable energy sources such as solar and wind\, and the use of battery technology in place of fossil fuels. New research and innovation is addressing some of these challenges and funding and jobs will certainly follow in these industries over the next decades. SUMMARY:Applications for Micro and Nano Material Processing with Lasers
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nChair: Jack Gabzdyl\, SPI Lasers \nIntroduction\nMuch progress has been made over the past decade in the commercial success of ultrashort pulse lasers (pico and femto) as well as shorter wavelength lasers (green and UV). Fibre laser technology has made these sources more reliable and more cost-effective. At the same time a number of micromachining\, surface engineering and cold micro cutting applications are being used in mass production. The global market for ultrashort laser systems significantly exceeds USD 1 Billion and the number of units installed annually is now between 3\,000 and 5\,000 units per year. \nModern ultrashort pulse lasers have high average power and very high repetition rates\, providing unique challenges for beam delivery – to deliver millions of pulses per second over a large area requires very fast and accurate scanning and beam imaging technologies. \nWhether in the area of additive or subtractive material processing\, systems and source prices are falling rapidly due to overcapacity of manufacture and efficiencies of scale. Simultaneously feature sizes continue to get smaller and are moving from micro to nano scale. \nThis webinar will bring you up to speed on the latest applications\, sources and beam delivery solutions for processing a wide range of materials from metals to ceramics\, polymers to glass. The webinar will be delivered using Zoom and delegates unable to attend live will be able to access a video of the sessions after the event. To facilitate concentration and delegate comfort\, the webinar is spread over 2 days. \n  \nProgramme\nDay 1 – 7 October 2020 13:30 PM – 16:30 PM (BST)  Sponsored by SPI Lasers \nSession 1 – 13:30 – 15:00 \nWelcome  Jack Gabzdyl  SPI Lasers \nUltra fast laser processing of high temperature superconductors  Bill O’Neill  Cambridge University \nMultibeam UV picosecond processing of PZT  Dimitris Karnakis  Oxford Lasers \nPrecision glass welding with hollow-core-fiber delivery of femtosecond laser pulses  Ulf Quentin   TRUMPF \nQ&A \nBreak \nSession 2 15:00 – 16:30  Sponsored by Aerotech \nHigh throughput femtosecond laser processing  Eric Mottay  Amplitude Laser \nTHz devices: ultra-fast laser micro structuring as enabling technology for their manufacture  Pavel Penchev  University of Birmingham                  \nLaser Microprocessing Through 5-Axis Scan Head Coordination with Servo Stages  William Land  Aerotech \nQ&A \n  \nDay 2 – 8 October 2020 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM (BST)  \nSession 3 – 09:30 – 11:10  Sponsored by 3D Micromac \nDirect Laser Interference Patterning: new ideas and concepts for high-throughput processing  Andres-Fabian Lasagni   Fraunhofer IWS \nRoll-to-roll laser processing of flexible devices  Ronny Neubert 3D-Micromac \nHigh throughput scanning for ultrafast lasers Lars Penning  Next Scan Technology \nQ&A \nBreak \nSession 4 – 11:10 – 12:20  Sponsored by Cailabs \nMulti-Plane Light Conversion-based beam shaping for laser microprocessing Pu Jian  Cailabs  \nLaser surface engineering for biological applications David Waugh  Coventry University \nHigh throughput\, high quality laser engraving  Stephen Dondieu  Heriot Watt University \n  \nVenue\nOnline \n  \nRegistration\nAILU Member fees:\nComplete Webinar (all sessions 7th and 8th October)  60 GBP \nNon Member fees\nComplete Webinar ( all sessions 7th and 8th October)  90 GBP \nAbove fees exclude VAT @ 20% \n  \nFee includes access to webinar videos after the event. \nFor more information please email or phone the AILU office (+44 (0)1235 539595). \n  \nAILU EVENT T&Cs\nSee AILU Event Terms and Conditions here.\n____________________________________\nBy registering for this meeting you agree that you are happy for AILU and Sponsors to contact you after the event

SUMMARY:E-Mobility Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n \n  \nIntroduction\nWorkshop Chair:  \nPaola de Bono (TWI Ltd) \nThe world of transport is undergoing the biggest change since the early 20th Century\, focusing on a rapid move towards electric vehicle (EV) production and the parallel reduction in petrol-powered vehicles. Highly demanding new emissions targets have been set by Government policy\, aiming to meet net-zero emissions by 2050. \nAdvancements to e-mobility technologies have been made\, however\, before we can reach the point where electrification becomes the norm\, there are a number of challenges for industry to overcome. These include light-weighting of components\, process improvements\, welding developments\, real-time quality assurance in-production\, safety\, flexible tools and jigs\, and prototyping from components through complete vehicles. \nLaser technology has been adopted by the automotive sector\, principally for its ability to perform high-quality and high-precision processing at high speed\, and at low relative cost. In recent years several advancements have been made in laser technology which have the potential of making an important contribution\, and thus\, supporting the breakthrough of e-mobility. \nThis workshop will include presentations from equipment-providers\, end-users\, academic and industrial researchers in the e-mobility field. You will hear and see how the latest developments in laser technology as well as academic and industrial research are supporting the e-mobility agenda.
