DESCRIPTION:  \nIntroduction \nChair: Danijela Rostohar\, Coventry University \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is highly topical globally due to much-publicised developments in everything from smart listening virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa through spam filters\, facial recognition\, autonomous vehicles\, smart walking robots and large language chatbots like Chat GPT. \nIn manufacturing huge changes are taking place\, enabled by Machine Learning and Digital Twins. Using these techniques\, processes can be improved and optimised in dramatically shorter times and the accumulated knowledge of decades of experience can be captured and exploited without the need for individual experts who previously held this know-how in their heads. As a result\, smarter factories are being enabled and manufacturing becomes digitised with the result in higher efficiency and lower emissions – reducing the impact on the environment\, and overcoming skills shortages in key processes. \nApplications in the laser industry and in academic research establishments will be presented at this workshop. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by\n \n\n  \nIntroduction\nChair: Moataz Attallah\, Universtity of Birmingham \nMetal Additive Manufacturing has advanced significantly in terms of process capability\, throughput and quality assurance. Higher power laser sources and advanced scanning hardware and software together with material optimisation have resulted in greater uptake of the application in a wide range of markets. \nFine metal powder or solid wire is fused by laser (and non-laser) technologies to form solid objects which can achieve high accuracy and repeatability with minimal excess weight or material and maximum mechanical properties – enabling new geometric solutions\, many inspired by natural forms. \nPresenters will cover recent developments in process control\, imaging\, modeling and material production as well as current advances in design for additive applications\, making this workshop of interest to anyone with an interest in manufacturing\, research or use of additive manufacturing. \nDelegates will be able to tour the Additive Manufacturing facilities at the university after the workshop. \nFree places are available for SMEs. DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by\n  \n \n  \n\nIntroduction\nChair: Wojciech Suder (Cranfield University) \nWith high power fibre lasers now well-established as the laser of choice for welding metals\, the thickness of laser welds in all metals is increasing. Keyhole welding\, with or without the assistance of arc welding (to make hybrid welds) is possible in material greater than 50 mm thick. On the other hand\, the high power lasers are capable of welding smaller thicknesses at very high speeds\, opening up new applications involving high quality and high throughput reflective metals like copper and aluminium. \nThis workshop is aimed at sharing the latest results from researchers and manufacturers in the field of laser welding in the multi-kW regime. DESCRIPTION:Event Sponsors\n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n\n  \nIntroduction\n \nChair: David Waugh (Coventry University) \nLaser surface texturing is being applied to more and more applications\, as the technology to treat surfaces improves and treatment rates increase the process is becoming more cost-effective.  In this workshop\, we will have presentations from industry on the laser and optical tools that are used to apply textures\, as well as from research organisations with experience of applying the latest know-how to speed up the process and apply it to new materials and applications. \nThe use of laser surfaces can be for modifying the wettability (making surfaces attract or repel water droplets) or the tribology (modifying the performance of a surface regarding friction or wear) or the optical reflectivity of surfaces (changing colour or contrast). Many products and components for implantable products or delivery systems for surgery have been manufactured using laser material processing. Miniature components may be produced by laser cutting\, be made more bio-compatible with laser surface treatments\, assembled using laser welding and have traceability guaranteed with permanent laser marking. Also\, in the realm of prototyping\, additive manufacturing of metallic parts from powder using lasers enables a fast turnaround for testing and evaluating designs. \nAt Heriot-Watt University\, the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC) is a joint facility with the universities of Edinburgh\, Glasgow and Robert Gordon (Aberdeen) which opened in 2020. DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nChair:  Matthew Wasley\, Photonics Lead\, KTN \n  \nClimate change is one of the most serious and urgent global issues facing our world in the 21st century. During global lockdowns in 2020 and 2021\, the impact on pollution and emissions under drastically lower transport has driven a new emphasis and urgency into tackling this topic and governments are talking about “building back better”. Glasgow will be the host city for COP26 (the UN Climate Change Conference) in November 2021\, and the UK government recently announced it will set in law an ambitious climate change target\, reducing emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. This is intended to bring the UK more than three-quarters of the way to net zero (when the amount of CO2 produced is no greater than the amount removed) by 2050. \nTo meet these targets\, the UK will need to increase its low carbon electricity generation capacity by a factor of four. This in turn requires further development of efficient renewable energy sources such as solar and wind\, and the use of battery technology in place of fossil fuels. New research and innovation is addressing some of these challenges and funding and jobs will certainly follow in these industries over the next decades. Fibre laser technology has made these sources more reliable and more cost-effective. At the same time a number of micromachining\, surface engineering and cold micro cutting applications are being used in mass production. The global market for ultrashort laser systems significantly exceeds USD 1 Billion and the number of units installed annually is now between 3\,000 and 5\,000 units per year. \nModern ultrashort pulse lasers have high average power and very high repetition rates\, providing unique challenges for beam delivery – to deliver millions of pulses per second over a large area requires very fast and accurate scanning and beam imaging technologies. \nWhether in the area of additive or subtractive material processing\, systems and source prices are falling rapidly due to overcapacity of manufacture and efficiencies of scale.
