SUMMARY:AILU Event: Low-Carbon Laser Manufacturing Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: \n \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nFREE TO ATTEND \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nIntroduction\nChair: Lewis Jones\, Loughborough University \nLaser manufacturing in industry has a challenging future ahead as we see the need to implement strategies to reach net zero by 2050. \nAt present the transition to net zero manufacturing is optional\, but this is rapidly becoming essential. \nCompanies need to pursue innovations in manufacturing technology while developing their knowledge and capability to compete in net zero and low carbon manufacturing. This requires companies to innovate under low carbon manufacturing. \nJoin us to discuss sustainable manufacturing and the innovations we have been working on at Manchester and Loughborough in laser cleaning and welding and to understand how to model and reduce energy consumption and Scope 2 emissions while maximising productivity. Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions for the energy used by organisations. Companies have to quantify\, aggregate and reduce Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect) emissions for net zero manufacturing. \nResearch undertaken by The University of Manchester together with Loughborough University and other partners will be presented in this sponsored webinar. \n  \nObjectives and workshop learning outcomes\n\nTo provide a methodology for analysing the energy consumption and carbon emissions for laser material processing.\nTo provide participants with key innovations in laser cleaning and welding and ideas for rapid processing with reduced energy consumption and emissions.\nTo road test and seek stakeholder input on the energy and emissions modelling framework.\n\n  \nProgramme\n14:00 – 14:10    Lewis Jones (Loughborough University)\nChair Introduction to session and online poll \n14:10 – 14:15    Lin Li (University of Manchester)\nWelcome from Professor of Laser Material Processing \n14:15 – 14:25   Paul Mativenga (University of Manchester)\nHow to make manufacturing sustainable in a net zero economy  \n14:25 – 14:35    Nick Goffin (Loughborough University)\nUnderstanding your laser system: ways to improve energy efficiency \n14:35 – 14:45    Jinglei Ouyang (University of Manchester)\nInnovations in laser cleaning and how to model and reduce energy and emissions  \n14:45 – 14:55     John Tyrer (Loughborough University)\nLaser safety in a net zero context \n14:55 – 15:05    Jinglei Ouyang/Paul Mativenga (University of Manchester)\nReusing cutting tools in a circular economy: lifecycle assessment and the role of laser cleaning \n15:05 – 15:15     Elliot Woolley (Loughborough University)\nDiscussion: Concluding poll and questions \n15:15 – 15:20     Lewis Jones (Loughborough University)\nClosing comments \n  \nFREE REGISTRATION \n \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nFunding and research for this event has been made possible by the EPSRC; grant number EP/S018190/1 “Research on the theory and key technology of laser processing and system optimisation for low carbon manufacturing (LASER-BEAMS)”. \nAILU EVENT T&Cs\nSee AILU Event Terms and Conditions here.\n____________________________________\nBy registering for this meeting you agree that you are happy for AILU and Sponsors to contact you after the event

SUMMARY:Medical Device Manufacturing with Lasers
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nChair: Richard Carter\, Heriot-Watt University \n \nMedical device manufacturing is a market sector that embodies a fast rate of progress and a high degree of innovation. Many products and components for implantable products or delivery systems for surgery have been manufactured using laser material processing. Miniature components may be produced by laser cutting\, be made more bio-compatible with laser surface treatments\, assembled using laser welding and have traceability guaranteed with permanent laser marking. Also\, in the realm of prototyping\, additive manufacturing of metallic parts from powder using lasers enables a fast turnaround for testing and evaluating designs. \nAt Heriot-Watt University\, the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC) is a joint facility with the universities of Edinburgh\, Glasgow and Robert Gordon (Aberdeen) which opened in 2020. The centre is equipped with a range of equipment including laser welding and marking\, 3D printing and laser marking as well as other complementary technologies. These state-of-the-art facilities are available to SMEs to facilitate innovative design and manufacturing enabled by cutting-edge technology. The industry-focused MDMC complements extensive academic-led research into medical devices at Heriot-Watt of value >£10M. \nThis workshop is presented in conjunction with Heriot-Watt University and is suitable for anyone with an interest in the research\, design and manufacturing of medical devices who would like to learn more about the technology and applications in this field. \n  \nProgramme\n13:15 – 13:25    Richard Carter (Heriot-Watt)\nWelcome & Introduction \nSession 1 – Sponsored by Coherent \n13:25 – 13:55    Marc Desmulliez (MDMC)\nIntroduction to the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre \n13:55 – 14:15    Roland Mayerhofer (Coherent)\nWhen precision matters most: laser fine welding and cutting in medical device manufacturing \n14:15 – 14:35    Jonathan Magee (ACSYS Lasertechnik)\nSurface structuring and black marking for medical devices \n14:35 – 14:45    Break \nSession 2 – Sponsored by Amplitude  \n14:45 – 15:05    Rob Eason (Highfield Diagnostics)\nLaser direct-write fabrication of paper-based microfluidic rapid diagnostic devices \n15:05 – 15:25     Calum Ross (Heriot Watt)\nUltrafast laser assisted etching: enabling miniaturised fibre-optic medical instrumentation \n15:25 – 15:45    Xavier Wolters  (Amplitude)\nAdvanced femtosecond lasers\, for medical device manufacturing \n15:45 – 15:55    Break \nSession 3 – Sponsored by Photonic Solutions & Light Conversion \n15:55 – 16:15    Bob Reuben (Intellipalp)\nManufacturing compliant tactile sensors for in vivo cancer assessment in soft tissue \n16:15 – 16:45    Ger O’Connor (NCLA (Galway))\nTowards Laser-enabled Manufacturing of a Cardiac Patch \n16:45 – 17:05    Simas Butkus (Light Conversion)\nMicromachining of medical device materials using bursts of femtosecond pulses
