Coherent delivers new SmartSense+ process monitoring

Coherent SmartSense+ is a new process monitoring accessory that provides a robust, cost-effective way to control or improve results in precision laser materials processing applications.

Process monitoring is critical to achieving high quality and reproducibility in laser cutting, welding, drilling, and marking tasks. Plus, it provides traceability and documentation, which is especially useful for medical device, e-mobility, and microelectronics manufacturing.

SmartSense+ delivers high quality process monitoring by combining visible and IR back-reflected optical signals from the laser process together with acoustic sensing. These signals are processed using both standard methods and AI/machine learning algorithms to provide an accurate “fingerprint” of laser processing results. In-line process monitoring can help detect even small deviations from a stable laser process, ultimately providing several advantages. For example, general quality assurance efforts in production are aided when an “ok”, “not ok” or even “questionable” indication is given to the operator immediately after the laser process is completed. The earlier a problem can be detected, the better the opportunity to stop or correct the production process before a bad part is assembled and – in a worst-case scenario – shipped.
